Find your Flow

You Don’t Have To Recreate What Worked Before

back to blog home

Today’s Find Your Flow message is about being intentional with what you carry into a new season—and leaving enough room for new routines, priorities and experiences to emerge.

You don’t have to be physically moving to find yourself entering a new chapter. Maybe your children are beginning a new school year, your work schedule is changing, you’re prioritizing a different area of your health or you’re becoming more serious about something you want to create. Even subtle changes can invite you to reconsider how you’re spending your time and what you want your days to feel like.

But when your life changes, it can be tempting to immediately recreate everything that worked before. Familiar routines make you feel safe. They give your days structure and help you feel like yourself, especially when other things are still uncertain.

The problem can be that you become so focused on preserving your old life that you don’t leave enough room to discover what might work in your new one.

After school, Chloe and I often come home to our apartment and swim. It has become part of our routine and something we both enjoy. Yesterday, instead of swimming, we played outside at our new house in the sprinklers with some toys. I’ve been so nervous about losing our pool and was focusing for a while on what we are giving up. It may have been different, but we had so much fun laughing and running in the sprinklers. It was one of those moments that made me think, we can do this. I’m sure there will be even more unexpected surprise routines that will become what we look forward to.

It reminded me that I don’t need to recreate every part of our current life in order for us to thrive and feel settled in our new home. Some things will come with us, some will evolve and there may be new routines we haven’t experienced enough to imagine yet.

The same is true of my workouts. I may not want to drive as far to the same hot yoga class once we move, but that doesn’t mean movement will become less important. Maybe I’ll walk more. Maybe I’ll practice yoga in my backyard. The intention can stay even when the way we honor it changes.

You may know what has supported you in the past, but you can’t always know what will support the version of you you’re becoming. You need enough structure to stay connected to what matters and enough openness to allow your life to take a new shape.

Imagine you were moving and couldn’t automatically bring everything from your current life with you. Not only your belongings, but also your routines, commitments, expectations and ways of using your time.

  • What would unquestionably deserve a place in your new life?
  • What still supports your energy, health and inspiration?
  • What are you continuing mostly because it’s familiar?
  • What would you like to prioritize now that may not have had enough space before?
  • And what might it be time to release—or allow to evolve—so something new can enter?

You don’t need to change every routine simply because your circumstances are changing. But this can be an opportunity to decide what you’re consciously choosing rather than automatically carrying everything forward.

Keep the intentions that matter and bring the routines that still serve you.

I invite you to leave enough open space that you may be surprised what your new chapter can offer you.

With love,

Laurin
