So a few of you have asked me how to define flow state or how to know if you’re really in it?
In psychology, “flow” is a state of mind in which you’re so immersed in whatever you’re doing that you forget about the world around you. You’re “in the zone”
There are so many different ways to access your flow but the way I know I’m really in a flow state is because I’m present, engaged, focused on something or someone in front of me. I’m inspired, empowered and I feel confident, capable and clear-minded while being open, caring and flexible at the same time. Time is irrelevant and I could continue what I’m doing with boundless energy and ease.
I can start talking about a topic and I immediately feel engaged, inspired and energized even if I was exhausted and distracted moments before. You can shift in an instant.
One of the questions I love from Dr. Demartini’s values process is:
What do you externally dialogue about most when you’re inspired?
Meaning, what do you love to bring social conversations to? Or if you were feeling tired, if x topic came up you’d light up and be engaged in the conversation?
You can find your flow in anything you’re doing, but when you connect to your highest values or link an action to something higher on your values, being in your zone is a more much obtainable and consistent way of being.
Sometimes getting into your flow requires discipline, intention and actions to find it and then who you are as a being takes over and the effort is seamless and aligned.
It’s not that there’s anything you technically need to do to be worthy or love-able, but the active state of doing, clearing your space energetically, being authentically you, showing up for yourself allows you to settle into a state of being that makes flow possible.

We do earn the right to be in our flow. If someone isn’t processing their emotions, doing any work on themselves, they don’t take care of themselves physically, mentally, soulfully, energetically or emotionally it would be impossible to continue to find their own flow. It’s easy to feel bogged down from this place. And, it’s only a few simple shifts away to get back on track.
You in your flow is truly who you are.
It IS your essence of being.
Being in flow is also not something to strive for 100% of the time. There’s time to lay low, to be present without the focus, to just take in your surroundings and you’ll find a different kind of flow through your presence and being.
You’ll just start to notice subtleties to know what feels aligned and soulful and what doesn’t. Where you feel your energy soften or expand vs contract. It’s about knowing and course correcting when you’re in a state of flight or fight or freeze so you can re-engage your parasympathetic nervous system into rest and digest.
It always feels better to have your own information and be in your flow, so you’ll start cultivating ways of being that produce this result more and more often as you gain the tool kit to support it.
Here’s a list of some of my favorite how’s:
(of course we go deeper into each of these in my courses and coaching, but here’s a starting point.)
1. Active meditations. This can be for grounding, owning your energetic space, releasing old wounds, balancing/generating energy, setting clear and heartfelt intentions.
2. Coaching/learning. feeling purposeful and showing up for someone else also helps remind me of who I am and deepen the principles and learnings and holds me accountable when I’m forgetting to use the tools and wisdom.
3. Meaningful Projects. A creative endeavor that’s inspiring and connected to my highest values or opening space for something new.
4. Inspired Challenges. Saying yes to something that will challenge me that inspires consistent aligned and vulnerable actions.
5. Movement. Doing something physical for yourself or showing up for self-care. This can be hiking, body work, energy work, anything that feels good in your body and it’s ok to look different based on what you would love each day.
6. Nature. Connecting to the elements. Sometimes for me it’s a rigorous hike, sometimes the hot springs or ocean, sometimes sitting and feeling the wind meditating or being present with my daughter…this too has endless ways of being in nature.
7. Community. Being around like-minded, spiritual and growth oriented people that show up for themselves and have deep and personal conversations.
What else is on your list? I love having these at my fingertips so I can turn to them as needed. You may want to write them down or visually represent them with pictures, I used to have that on my fridge with pictures and ideas. It helped me for years until it became second nature.
On a scale of 1-10,
do you find yourself in your flow daily?
What could you focus on from the list above that could serve you this weekend?
As always, thank you for replying and sharing your stories and letting me know your questions. I love writing these messages and connecting even more deeply to everything I learn, share and teach.
I look forward to even more deep dives again soon, but for now, I’m here every Friday as we all continue to show up for ourselves, our loved ones and step into our gifts even more together.
With love,
Laurin xx
P.S. Wishing a very Happy Birthday today to Heidi. Some of you may not have interacted with her yet, but she’ s been along side me for years making everything you see possible. She cares so deeply about each and every one of you that show up to work with us and has been committed to providing you with the very best tools and responsiveness. I hope you each get the pleasure of a conversation with her at some point.
